How to sling like a Balearic slinger
Переглядів 1 млн3 роки тому
Here I show you how a Balearic slinger uses their sling to propel a stone at velocities up to one hundred miles per hour, and how you can learn this safely with tennis balls before moving up to stones. slinging.org

Staff slings are easy to make and use. The only limit to the size of rocks you can throw is your own strength. Once you try this, you will wonder how it was ever forgotten. slinging.org
Long range slinging in the Balearic islands
Переглядів 11 тис.3 роки тому
This shows several different styles of long range slinging in full speed and slo mo. This was at Colònia de Sant Jordi and Ses Salines in Mallorca. It was recorded on a Google Nexus 5X at 120 frames/second and sped up in Shotcut by 4X to get normal speed playback. www.slinging.org

Переглядів 3,5 тис.3 роки тому
This is Silvio in action at the VII International Balearic Slinging Competition in Mallorca, 29th Feb 2020. This video is mostly about me learning to use Shotcut for video editing. Three separate slo mo clips were combined and then sections of them were sped up to normal speed, and some matrix-style sound FX were added at the speed transitions.

Fustibalus (staff sling) throwing a stone
Переглядів 2,5 тис.3 роки тому
Throwing a stone with a staff sling. This was invented by the Romans and they called it the fustibalus. Auxiliary troops used these in the early stages of a battle before giving way to the Legionaries. This weapon is powerful, easy to make, easy to use and you can quickly become very accurate with it. It persisted in European warfare until gunpowder replaced it. slinging.org
Staff sling in slo mo

Launching a tennis ball from a staff sling recorded at 240 frames/sec. The sling has been shortened to give a high launch angle. With longer cords the release would happen later and the trajectory would be flatter. slinging.org
Staff sling reloads
Переглядів 8363 роки тому
The key to smooth reloading of the staff sling is to keep the left hand in the high grip position and do everything with the right hand. Gripping the staff the other way around leads to awkward hand shifting during the reloading that kills your speed and increases the risk of slip-offs. slinging.org
Slinging, reloading without looking

I haven't used one of these in a long time, going to make one for myself and my son. This was a great video. When you mentioned golf ball size rocks I thought to myself, has anyone ever played "sling golf"? There's frisbee golf, why not sling golf, I think when I get our slings made my boy and I might have to set up a little round

People have played sling golf. Controlling hook and slice through spin angle is hard and golf balls with their dimples do wild curves if not sent just right.

That's impressive, even in modern warfare this kind of equipment can be used effectively. What is sad is that the stone is replaced by a grenade. I hope this madness stop someday in this place. I feel a little bit melancolic seeing a sling used in real war once more when we tend to use it as an object to have fun today

@@davidmorningstar Thanks for the reply and helpful tips. Yeah I've checked him out (I'm a newbie so that's actually the guy I learned/stole the most from in terms of sling creation so far would say; currently use his double finger loops exclusively). Have not seen him sling before though. There was a video of him showing the technique... Much longer and heavier sling than I use. I think I release too late with this technique (throws keeps spiking down hard). And more than anything I think I've been holding it wrong prior to swing (too low; like I would hold before going into balearic style). That clip of you was helpful to show that. That being said guess I won't go with this technique rn; it looks way harder to generate proper power with using a shorter sling, body gets in the way, and I'm happy with the balearic style for the shorter string; already throw pretty hard so accuracy is my main goal atm (have ZERO of that). Will definitely try this later on though. Thanks again and have a nice day! 👍 Edit: actually WILL ask another question. Previously most completed slings I've made I've incorporated the pouch last (I do them out of paracord). Just now though am learning to incorporate it into the braid (rather than knot-pouch with separate cord-knot-continue braid) but it's not going great, bit of guesswork, and is quite frustrating. Dk if you have experience with the making of them (?) but in your experience is it bad to have knots in the middle of the cord (for accuracy/power)? Or should I just as well just do them and make it easier to make the slings?

I have done some sling work in the past, using slings I made of different lengths. I never had much accuracy (nothing like what we see here), but a sling can move a rock a very long distance and at very high speeds at shorter distances. If the rock connects with the human head, then it's lights out.

Being siege weapons were common during Roman period, I believe this smaller version would have been there, although probably not as useful as larger versions that broke boundaries. Also men thought of wars differently then so hand to hand was more acceptable , the Gladius was most useful.
